Knowledge Item: CA-Client-Patient Characteristics-10
Characteristics of Clients in Medical and Psychosocial Programs

This Knowledge Item characterizes the sample in terms of indicators of service need and vulnerability. Levels of these characteristics are shown for males and females in projects characterized as medical or psychosocial in their focus. Medical programs have the provision of HIV/AIDS medical services as their primary focus. Psychosocial support programs recruit clients into support programs which feature counseling and case management and link the clients to HIV medical services.

Clients in the two kinds of programs differ in certain characteristics. The differences may be due to: a) alternate ways of reporting (or asking about) needs and vulnerabilities between medical and psychosocial support programs; b) recruitment strategies differing between medical and psychosocial programs; and c) the fact that the medical programs tend to recruit any individual with HIV while the psychosocial programs are targeted to specific communities.

Knowledge Item: CA-Client-Patient Characteristics-12 shows related models of the difference in the patient-client pools in the Medical and Psychosocial Programs.
