Knowledge Item: CA-Client-Patient
Characteristics-23
Profile of African American Patients of Haitian Origin
This Knowledge Item characterizes the
sample in terms of indicators of service need and vulnerability.
Levels of these characteristics are shown for African American/Black males and females
with HIV/AIDS of Haitian origin. The needs and behaviors for this group
of 155 patients are separately profiled because individuals of Haitian
origin were specifically identified as being a high risk population for
HIV/AIDS and have been historically stigmatized as the only
ethnic-racial group specifically named as being at high risk for HIV
transmission. Several projects, including those at CCHER
in Boston (Dorchester, MA) and the SUNY Medical
Center in Brooklyn have specifically developed programs to help
individuals of Haitian origin and culture. In particular, the CCHER
program was designed specifically for the cultural and treatment needs
of the Haitian immigrant community.
