Knowledge Item: CA-Client-Patient Characteristics-07
Contrast of Demographics and Behaviors of Pregnant Women to Other Female Clients
Compared to women not identified as
pregnant at enrollment, the
131 women identified as
pregnant at enrollment were younger, and were more likely to be unemployed. There were
some differences in funding sources for services, but these are mostly attributable to
project location (site) differences and the fact that some projects target pregnant women
and disproportionately enroll them in services. Pregnant women were less likely to be
cigarette smokers and more likely to have current unprotected sex with men. On other
behavioral characteristics related to illicit or problem substance abuse and current
levels of sexual activity, the pregnant women were at about the same levels as the women
not identified as pregnant.
Aside from needs specifically associated with their pregnancies, pregnant
clients have needs typical of those of other high-need women with HIV/AIDS in the same
programs.
Note: The
131 women were pregnant at the time of enrollment into the program.
Twenty additional women (for a total of 151 pregnant women served)
became pregnant during the course of their service episode or had their
pregnancy detected within the program.
The
percentages shown are for a sample of 2225 women enrolled to services in
the Cooperative Agreement Projects.
