The Risk Reduction Program at the Division of Adolescent Medicine at
Children's Hospital Los Angeles has been providing health care and psychosocial services
to transgender youth with HIV since 1990 and to transgender youth at very high risk since
1994. To date, The Risk Reduction Program has provided care to over 40 male to female
transgender youth ages 15-23 and has learned a lot about effective interventions with this
population, unique HIV prevention and treatment issues, and the barriers transgenders face
when seeking services. Through this presentation, a team of staff members including a
physician, a psychologist and a transgender youth educator will address the following
issues:
1) Utilization of a harm reduction model in the provision of medical and
psychosocial care to high risk and infected transgender youth.
2) The importance of life skills training in risk reduction programs for
transgender youth.
3) The barriers preventing transgender youth from accessing available
prevention and treatment services.
4) The steps agencies can take to make their staff and service environment
more sensitive to transgender and transsexual youth needs.
