90 Minute Workshop

Category: Care & Services

Presentation Date & Time: 03/25/98 13:45:00

This panel discussion will consider cultural competency in treating multi-diagnosed people of color, with an emphasis on African-Americans. The perception of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and mental illness in the African-American and other ethnic communities is discussed, and there is an examination of how attitudes and beliefs about race affect the relationship between treatment providers and HIV/AIDS clients. The significant role of culture and family in treatment also is examined. Recommendations for training staff around issues of cultural competency in working with multi-diagnosed populations are presented. Panel participants include medical, mental health and substance abuse service providers and clients as well as representatives of the local HIV/AIDS public policy network.
